Tips for Caring for Your Sneakers

Spanish Version

How to take care of your sneakers?

Nowadays, it is relevant to look good at all times. You never know when you are going to meet someone important or meet friends and acquaintances. At the same time, when you have a limited budget, it is key to keep your clothes and shoes in perfect condition because they last longer. Taking good care of your clothes will help you to save a lot of money over the years.

However, caring for your stylish and high-performance sneakers is a tough job. If you wear them all the time, they will constantly be in contact with dirt, dust, rain, and many other things. If you can take good care of these sneakers, they could last for a long time. Here are some tips on how to keep your sneakers as good as possible.

Keep your shoes organized

Do not stack them on top of each other. Most of us stack our shoes in the closet or a corner of the house. Maybe you have more than 20 pairs of shoes, but little space to store them all. However, the soles of shoes usually have a lot of dirt on them, so stacking them on top of each other will transfer a lot of dirt to the tops of other shoes. Buying an organizational rack could help you keep them clean and cared for. If you don’t have space, store your favorite shoes in boxes when you’re not wearing them.

Clean your shoes by hand regularly

Most people don’t even bother cleaning their shoes, which doesn’t make sense if you think about it because shoes are in contact with the floor. Check the manufacturer’s label instructions on the cleaning method. You can put them in the washing machine, but it is best to wash them by hand and let them air dry. The washing machine can peel them off and break them, plus the color can change, and maybe some logo details will fade. In my experience, I put a pair of Converse in the washing machine. They lost the white color, and part of the rubber on the sides broke.

Wash with toothpaste

It sounds unbelievable, but it works like dry cleaning. Use a little toothpaste and a toothbrush. With little effort, your sneakers will be white again. Finally, clean the toothpaste with a cloth.

Use cream for leather shoes

If the material of your sneakers is leather, you can use a colorless cream to polish them and give them a new look. You can apply this cream once a week or more.

Wash the laces separately

Sometimes just washing the laces makes your sneakers look clean. Laces resist much more washing than the rest of the shoes. Try to wash them more often.

Control internal odor

One of the measures to control this odor is to wear socks, depending on whether it is winter or summer, you can wear short ankle socks or long socks. You can also use a good-smelling deodorant to control the odor produced by sweat.

Watch your step

Some shoes are ready to use in mud, dirt, or on a grassy field, but most will not last long. Be sure to wear shoes appropriate for the occasion and avoid walking in difficult areas. This may seem obvious, but paying more attention to where you walk will help prolong the life of your shoes. Also, avoid the rain.

Don’t wear shoes all the time

Some people use them all the time, even inside the house. If you like to wear shoes indoors, maybe you should have an inexpensive pair for that purpose. Depending on where you work, it may even be acceptable to remove your shoes while at your desk.

Don’t keep shoes for too long

We usually have a favorite pair of shoes, which we save for special occasions. Sometimes those occasions take a long time to arrive, and we leave them in their box for months and months. This also deteriorates them because the materials age and start to peel and break.

How long should I wear my sneakers?

Remember that even if they are kept clean, there is a limit to how long you can wear your shoes. Active footwear, such as sneakers have a limit of 500 miles limit rule. Most athletic shoes, such as running shoes, walking shoes, dress shoes, tennis shoes, or all-purpose sneakers, should be replaced when worn for 500 miles.

If you walk three to four hours a week every day, they should be replaced every six months. If you are heavier and walk a lot, you should change them every three months. Likewise, if you wear them every day.

Finally, the most important is to enjoy your favorite shoes and get the most out of them. And you? How do you take care of your shoes?
